toy hair clippers

toy hair clippers
grooming question?

I have two toy poodles and I really want to be able to groom them myself. I bought a home groomers kit and the clippers we NOT any good! It would not even cut the hair. What is the best kind of clippers?

Oster was a favorite though if I remember correctly were pricey?? For the nice short cut you would need a number 10 blade and it’s the easiest on to use as well especially if you don’t know how to use the clippers yet. A poodle is probably the easiest breed to groom because of the fur they have. Even if you make a little mistake no one will be able to tell. You are going to want to give the dogs a quick shave if they have a lot of fur, then bathe, then shave properly. The fur needs to be clean for best results but no point in washing and drying a whole bunch of fur you’re going to remove it so a quick shave before the bath is recommended. The dog must be completely dry before starting. Start down the back and make sure you work strategically. To shave the muzzle, leave the dogs’ “beard” so that you have something to hold on to while you shave and remove the beard last. Don’t shave the ear unless it’s a mess. If you shave it, you can carefully trim the stray hairs around the ear itself with scissors.. Be careful not to cut the ear. If your dogs fidget too much, don’t do it. Legs are a little tough because they are so small and you’re going to want to shave upwards when you cant reach the fur. It does cut the fur shorter but as mentioned before, use a 10 blade and with poodle fur it’ll hardly show. If you are using a 7 then shaving in the opposite direction will make it look like a ten .. Again.. wont show too much.. You can try blending it a bit if the difference shows. The feet are tricky too. Most dogs cant stand you bothering their feet. Cutting the nails first would help. If they have white nails then cut at least a cm below the pink. Buy a coagulant in case you cut too high.. it’s not a biggie if you do.. clean it and use the coagulant and they’ll be fine. If you are confident enough to use the clippers on their feet, you’ll have better results. Shave in between the toes and under the pads. Otherwise, with scissors.. very carefully.. lift the fur in between the toes and cut as much as you can, you can use a brush to fluff up the fur to make it easier to cut. Again, under the feet too. The scissors need to have a a sharp tip but they really nice curved scissors with a round tip though still sharp and at least if you poke them no major damage will be caused. You can pretty much pull the hair out of the dogs’ ears. There are products (power) that stiffen the hair first but as long as it’s IN the ear, you can kind give a quick tug and it’ll come right out. It doesn’t hurt too much unless the dogs are sensitive. Sometimes dogs can act.. they pretend to be in pain to stop you from doing certain things.. like ear hair pulling. Don’t startle unless you are sure at some point during the grooming process that you did hurt your dog.

GOOD LUCK
